These prices are approximate. They are national US retail figures, and what you actually pay varies with your region, your supplier, the season and how much you buy at once. The maths

How this vinyl flooring calculator works

Area and waste work the same as any plank floor. What changes with LVP is everything after that: a glue-down floor needs adhesive measured by the notch of the trowel, and a floating one needs a pad — unless the plank already has one on its back.

order area = (rooms − exclusions) × waste
boxes = ⌈ order area ÷ box coverage ⌉
adhesive = ⌈ floor area ÷ notch spread rate ⌉
spread rate = 200 / 150 / 100 sq ft per gallon

LVP is far less forgiving of a wavy subfloor than carpet or a thick laminate — every dip telegraphs through. If the floor is more than about 3/16 in out over 10 ft, flatten it first with the self-leveling compound calculator.

    Each room is added together and each exclusion comes back out, measured on its own.

    Apply cutting waste

    Straight rows waste the least; a diagonal or herringbone lay needs the most because every plank is cut on an angle.

    The order area is divided by the coverage on the pack — about 24 sq ft for most LVP — and rounded up.

    Branch on the method

    Click-lock takes a pad and no adhesive. Glue-down takes adhesive and no pad. Loose-lay takes neither across the field.

    Measure the adhesive by the notch

    A fine notch stretches a gallon over 200 sq ft; a coarse one covers 100. The notch, not the floor size, is what doubles the order.

Good to know

Vinyl plank questions, answered

A 12 by 12 room is 144 sq ft. With a 10% cutting allowance that is about 159 sq ft, and at the usual 24 sq ft a box it comes to 7 boxes. Box coverage varies more in LVP than in laminate — anywhere from 18 to 30 sq ft — so overwrite the figure with what is on your own pack.

The plank is. Rigid-core LVP has a plastic or stone-composite core that does not swell, which is why it goes in bathrooms and basements where laminate cannot. What is not waterproof is the joint: water can still get past a click seam and sit on the subfloor underneath. For a room that floods rather than splashes, glue it down.

Glue-down. A floating floor over a wet-prone room traps whatever gets under it, and a click seam is the easiest way in. Bonding the plank to the subfloor removes the void and keeps the whole assembly flat. It is more work and you will not get the planks back up cleanly, which is the trade-off.

It is set by the trowel, not the floor. A 1/16 x 1/16 in notch spreads a gallon over about 200 sq ft, a 1/16 x 1/32 in notch over 150, and a 1/8 x 1/8 in notch over 100. Using a coarser notch than the adhesive datasheet calls for doubles your cost and can leave the plank sitting on ridges.

No. Two layers of padding let a floating floor deflect far enough under foot to work the locking joints apart, and most warranties say so explicitly. The calculator drops underlayment from the order as soon as you tick the attached pad box.

Over tile, sheet vinyl or a sound wood floor, usually yes, provided it is flat and firmly attached. Over carpet, never — the pile lets the floor move. Grout lines deeper than about 1/8 in need filling first, or they will read through as lines in the new floor.

It is the thickness of the clear top film in mils, and it is what decides how long the floor lasts rather than how thick the plank is. 6 mil suits a spare room, 12 mil a family home, and 20 mil or more is what goes into a shop. It does not change any quantity here, but it moves the price per square foot a long way.
