How much does concrete weigh per cubic foot and yard

Concrete is heavy enough that its weight is the first thing to check before you load a trailer, pour on a deck or an upper floor, or fill a dumpster — and it is a plain multiplication once you know the density.

How much does concrete weigh? About 150 lb per cubic foot and 4,050 lb per cubic yard — two tons a yard, 2,400 kg per cubic meter. A 4 in slab weighs 50 lb per square foot.

How much does a yard of concrete weigh, by type

ACI 318 uses 145 lb/ft³ for plain normal-weight concrete and 150 lb/ft³ with reinforcing steel; 150 is the planning figure used here. Fresh concrete weighs a few percent more than hardened, air-dry concrete; the difference is water that evaporates as it dries.

Area times thickness in feet times 150. The per-square-foot column is the one to use for a floor load; the slab-size columns are what the demolition dumpster has to take.

How many yards in a concrete truck

A typical mixer drum holds 10–11 cubic yards, and most trucks deliver 8–10 yards a load. At about 9 cubic yards that is 36,450 lb of concrete on a truck that weighs around 27,000 lb empty — roughly 63,450 lb, close to the 66,000 lb a typical four-axle mixer is allowed to gross; limits vary by axle count and state. Small orders, often under 4–6 yards, carry a short-load fee, and that gross weight is why many contractors keep a mixer off a residential driveway and pour from the street.

Bagged concrete yields

Bagged mix comes in 40, 50, 60 and 80 lb bags; yields per bag, bags per yard and mix ratios are on the concrete bag yields guide.

Densities: Portland Cement Association, Concrete Basics — normal-weight concrete about 140–150 lb/ft³ (2,400 kg/m³); ACI 318 design densities (145 plain, 150 reinforced); ACI 213R-14, Guide for Structural Lightweight-Aggregate Concrete (about 70–120 lb/ft³, 110 typical); ACI 304.3R for heavyweight concrete; insulating lightweight per ACI 523. Truck figures are typical for US four-axle transit mixers — 10–11 yd³ drums, 8–10 yd³ loads, about 27,000 lb empty and 66,000 lb gross under the federal bridge formula (FHWA) — and vary by axle count and state; check your supplier. Pickup payload: manufacturer ratings for half-ton trucks. Accessed 2026-10-14. Densities vary with the aggregate; 150 lb/ft³ is the planning figure engineers use for normal-weight concrete.

Concrete weight questions

How much does a cubic yard of concrete weigh?

About 4,050 lb, or two tons. A yard is 27 cubic feet at 150 lb each.

How much does a 4 inch concrete slab weigh per square foot?

50 lb. A 10 × 10 ft patio at 4 in weighs 5,000 lb.

How much does a concrete truck weigh?

Around 27,000 lb empty and about 63,450 lb loaded with 9 yards, close to the 66,000 lb a typical four-axle mixer may gross.

Can a pickup truck carry a yard of concrete?

No. A yard of wet concrete is about 4,050 lb; a half-ton pickup is rated for roughly 1,500–2,000 lb of payload. Haul bags, or have it delivered.

Does concrete get lighter as it dries?

Slightly — fresh concrete weighs a few percent more than hardened, air-dry concrete; the difference is water that evaporates as it dries.
