Drywall sheet sizes and thicknesses
Board comes in five lengths and five thicknesses, and the combination decides how many joints you finish and whether a ceiling sags. Sizes, coverage, weights, the framing spacing each thickness is rated for, and the board count for a ceiling.
Drywall sheet sizes and what each one covers
Standard board is 4 ft wide, which matches 16 and 24 inch framing without ripping. The 54 inch sheet exists for one reason: hung horizontally it covers a 9 ft wall in two courses with no third strip.

Weights are standard 1/2 inch board at about 1.6 lb per square foot. Lightweight 1/2 inch runs nearer 1.2 lb per square foot, taking a 4 × 8 sheet down to about 38 lb — which is the difference between a one-person ceiling and a two-person ceiling.
Drywall thicknesses and the framing they are rated for
Thickness is not a preference on a ceiling. Standard half-inch board is rated to 16 inch framing overhead and will sag between joists at 24 inches, especially under a water-based texture. This is the table that decides which board goes up.

How to calculate the number of ceiling boards
Ceiling area divided by sheet area, rounded up, plus an allowance for offcuts. A ceiling has no doors or windows to deduct, which makes it the simplest board count in the house — and the one where sheet length pays off most, because every butt joint overhead has to be finished standing on a stilt or a bench.

The counts above are the bare division rounded up, before waste. A 12 × 16 ceiling is exactly four 4 × 12 sheets on paper, but order five: one bad lift, one crushed corner, or one joist that is out of line and the fourth sheet is short.
What goes up with the board
Per 1,000 square feet of board — roughly 31 sheets of 4 × 8 — which is how tape and compound are sold and estimated.

Why sheet length is the decision that matters
Tapered edges run along the long sides of every sheet, and those joints are easy to finish flat. The short ends are cut square, so a butt joint sits proud and has to be feathered wide — often 16 to 24 inches either side — to disappear under paint. Longer sheets exist to delete butt joints, not to save money on board.
A 12 ft wide room boarded with 4 × 12 sheets across the ceiling has no butt joints at all. The same room in 4 × 8 sheets picks up a row of them down the middle. The board costs about the same either way; the finishing does not.
