How many drywall screws per sheet, with sheet weights and mud

Three numbers decide how a drywall job goes: what each sheet weighs when you lift it to the ceiling, how many screws go in, and how much compound it takes to hide them. Sheet sizes themselves are on the drywall sheet sizes guide.

How many drywall screws per sheet? About 32 on a wall at 16 in spacing, about 40 on a ceiling at 12 in, for a 4 × 8 sheet. That sheet weighs about 51 lb in ½ in (70 lb in ⅝ in Type X, 40 lb lightweight) and takes about 0.34 gallons of joint compound through three coats.

What size screws for 1/2 and 5/8 drywall

The screw must bite ⅝ in into wood or ⅜ in into metal past the panel, which is why steel framing takes a shorter screw. Coarse thread for wood studs, fine thread (Type S) for steel. Quarter-inch board usually goes over an existing wall, so its screw has to pass through the old board too.
