How often to water new sod
Sod arrives with an inch of roots and no way to reach water below them. For two weeks the hose is the only thing keeping it alive; after that, the schedule loosens as fast as the roots go down.
How often to water new sod? Twice a day for the first week, once a day in the second, then every other day. Roots take hold in about 14 days; the lawn is established at about 42 days.
New sod watering schedule
| When | How often | How long | What to look for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | twice a day | about 20 min per zone | Soak within 30 minutes of laying; water through the sod into the soil |
| Week 1 | twice a day | about 15 min per zone | Morning and afternoon; keep the soil under the sod damp — lift a corner to check |
| Week 2 | once a day | about 20 min per zone | White roots are reaching the soil; let the surface dry between waterings |
| Weeks 3–4 | every other day | about 30 min per zone | Every other day, deeper |
| After week 4 | twice a week | about 30 min per zone | Twice a week, about 1 in in total — the established-lawn schedule |
Minutes depend on the sprinkler: the test is a corner lifted after watering — the soil underneath should be dark and damp, not muddy and not dusty.
How long does sod take to root
About 14 days to take hold, 42 days to root fully. The tug test: grab a handful of grass and pull gently; when the sod resists rather than lifting, the roots are in. Cool weather slows it, heat with good watering speeds it, and sod laid on compacted or dry soil may never root at all — the soil under it should be loosened and watered before the first roll goes down.
When can you walk on and mow new sod
Stay off it for the first 14 days except to move the sprinkler. First mow at about 14 days, once the tug test passes and the grass is 3–4 in tall: let the surface dry for a day first, set the mower high, and take off no more than a third.
When to fertilize new sod
A starter fertilizer on the soil before laying, then nothing until the sod has been mowed twice — about four to six weeks. After that, the normal schedule from the fertilizer rates guide.
Hot weather and shade
Above 85 °F, add a midday watering in week one and lay sod in the morning, straight off the pallet — stacked sod keeps only 12 hours in that heat (the full table is on the sod pallet guide). In shade, water less often and watch for fungus; sod that stays wet overnight rots before it roots.
The sod calculator works out how many pallets the lawn takes.

New sod questions
How long after laying sod can you walk on it?
Light traffic after about 14 days, once the tug test passes; keep dogs, play and furniture off until 42 days.
How long after laying sod can you mow?
About 14 days, when the sod resists a tug and the grass is 3–4 in tall.
Can you overwater new sod?
Yes — sod sitting in standing water, or wet overnight every night, rots at the roots. Water in the morning, and lift a corner to check rather than guessing.
Why is my new sod turning brown?
Almost always dry edges and seams: the joints dry first. Water longer, overlap the sprinkler zones, and press the seams down. Brown in a pattern that matches the pallet stack means it was stored too long before laying.
