Paver sizes and weights

Concrete weighs about 145 pounds a cubic foot, and everything below follows from that one number: 12 pounds per square foot for every inch of thickness. Once you have that, the weight of any paver, any pallet and any load is arithmetic.

How much does a pallet of pavers weigh? A standard pallet of 2⅜ in concrete pavers weighs 2,900 to 3,400 lb (1,300–1,550 kg) and covers 100 to 120 ft². A pallet of thin 1⅜ in pavers weighs 2,000 to 2,500 lb, and heavy 3⅛ in driveway pavers run 3,000 to 3,800 lb. A single paver weighs about 12 lb per square foot per inch of thickness: a 4 × 8 in holland stone is about 6.3 lb, a 12 × 12 in paver 16 or 28 lb.

Paver thickness, and what it is for

Three thicknesses cover almost everything sold. The thickness is chosen by what drives over it, not by how it looks — and it is the only variable in the weight of a square foot.

How much does a paver weigh?

Face area times thickness times twelve. These are the sizes a yard actually stocks, at the standard 2⅜ in unless noted.

A 12 × 12 in paver is the one people ask about, and the answer depends entirely on which of the two thicknesses is in front of you: 16 or 28 pounds. The thin one is a stepping stone, the thick one is paving.

How much does a pallet of pavers weigh?

Pallets are built to a coverage, not to a count, so the weight follows the thickness and how many square feet the yard puts on one.

Three to four thousand pounds is the honest answer for a standard pallet, and yards do go to 4 800 lb on heavy commercial units. That is more than most half-ton pickups are rated to carry, which is why pavers turn up on a boom truck and get set where you want them rather than tipped at the kerb.

Two figures worth having before you order: a 16 × 12 ft patio is 192 ft², so about two standard pallets and roughly 5 500 lb of paver alone — before the base stone, which weighs more again.

How many square feet does a pallet of pavers cover?

1 pallet of pavers covers about 100 to 120 square feet (standard 2⅜ in), whatever the shape of the paver on it. Thin 1⅜ in pallets go further, 120 to 150 ft², because each layer weighs less. The piece count is simply that coverage times how many pavers fill a square foot.

How many pavers come on a pallet?

So how many 12 × 12 pavers come on a pallet? About a hundred of the thick ones, up to 150 of the thin. How many 4 × 8 pavers in a pallet? Around 500. The exact count is printed on the pallet tag and differs by plant, so treat the table as the figure to plan with and the tag as the one to order from.

To turn a patio into pallets, divide its area plus 5–10 % for cuts by the coverage and round up: a 300 ft² patio with 10 % waste is 330 ft², so three pallets of standard 2⅜ in pavers.

How many pallets for a patio

The common patio sizes, with 10 % added for cuts and figured at both ends of the standard pallet's 100–120 ft². Where the two columns disagree, the pallet tag decides — and a part pallet is usually sold by the square foot, so the last one need not be bought whole.

The weight column is the laid area at 28.5 lb per ft² — the stone that ends up in the patio, not the spares. It is worth reading before a delivery is booked: anything past two pallets is more than a residential driveway kerb should see from a tipping truck, and it is the reason yards use boom trucks that can set pallets over a fence.

Pallets are only half the order.
