How long does drywall mud take to dry?
Drywall mud comes in two kinds. Ready-mixed joint compound in a bucket dries — the water has to evaporate, so the room's temperature and humidity set the pace. Setting-type compound mixed from powder hardens by a chemical reaction within a set range of minutes, largely regardless of humidity.
How long between coats? About 24 hours for ready-mixed mud at 70 °F and around 70% humidity — USG's own example. In the Gypsum Association's chart a tape coat takes 17 h at 70 °F and 50% humidity, 26 h at 70%, and 3 d at 90%. Setting-type mud like Easy Sand 45 can be recoated in about an hour, once it has set.
Joint compound drying time chart by temperature and humidity
Time for ready-mixed joint compound to dry. D = days, H = hours. Times are for the tape-embedding coat, 1/16 to 5/64 in of wet compound under bare tape with adequate ventilation; fill and finish coats take longer in proportion to their thickness. GA notes that drying much faster than 8 hours or slower than 48 hours is known to give poor results, and recommends the chart over visual checks or moisture meters.

Keep the room at 55 °F or warmer until the compound is completely dry — USG sets that as the floor on its ready-mixed products. Go by the chart time first. USG's hand test helps: compound that feels cooler than the wall around it is still giving off water.
Will it dry overnight? Humidity limits for 24 and 48 hours
USG's cold-and-humid-weather sheet gives the highest relative humidity at which joint compound still dries within a day, or within two days, at each temperature.
| Room temperature | 50 °F | 55 °F | 60 °F | 65 °F | 70 °F | 75 °F | 80 °F | 85 °F | 90 °F |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dries in 24 h at humidity up to | 23% | 37% | 50% | 59% | 67% | 71% | 76% | 79% | 84% |
| Dries in 48 h at humidity up to | 65% | 71% | 76% | 81% | 85% | 88% | 90% | 92% | 93% |
The two levers are heat and moving air. USG notes that raising the room by 5 °F lowers its relative humidity by about 15 points (65% to 50%), and ventilation carries the moisture out.
Setting-type joint compound: Easy Sand and Durabond times
| Product | Working time | Sets in |
|---|---|---|
| USG Sheetrock Easy Sand 5 | 5 min | 10–14 min |
| USG Sheetrock Easy Sand 20 | 20 min | 25–35 min |
| USG Sheetrock Easy Sand 45 | 45 min | 50–65 min |
| USG Sheetrock Easy Sand 90 | 90 min | 95–120 min |
| USG Sheetrock Easy Sand 210 | 170 min | 170–270 min |
| USG Sheetrock Durabond 20 | — | 20–30 min |
| USG Sheetrock Durabond 45 | — | 30–80 min |
| USG Sheetrock Durabond 90 | — | 85–130 min |
On Easy Sand the number on the bag is the working time; on Durabond it is the approximate setting time. Temperature, humidity and how thick you apply it nudge the setting time within its range. Once a coat has set it can take the next one even if it still looks damp — that is what makes same-day taping, filling and finishing possible — but it still has to dry before you prime. Durabond's set is virtually unaffected by humidity, USG says — but it is hard to sand once dry, so smooth it before it sets or while it is still damp.
How long before you can sand, prime and paint?
- Sand ready-mixed and Easy Sand coats only when fully dry — the chart time for your room. Durabond is the exception: knife it smooth while damp rather than sanding it later.
- Prime when every coat is thoroughly dry and the dust is off; the ready-mixed data sheets make that a condition. On setting-type work USG expects decorating the next day.
- Paint once the primer is dry. Paint and primer times are in the paint drying and recoat guide.
With three coats — tape, fill, finish — a ready-mix job at 70 °F and 50–70% humidity takes two to three days of drying before the last sanding, longer if the fill coats go on heavy. How much mud and tape a sheet takes is in the drywall mud and screws guide, and the drywall ceiling calculator counts sheets, screws, compound and tape for a ceiling.

Drywall mud drying questions
About 24 hours for ready-mixed compound at 70 °F and 70% humidity. The Gypsum Association chart gives 17 h at 50% humidity and 3 d at 90%; at 50 °F and 70% humidity it is 2 d 8 h.
Ready-mixed mud, no — even at 90 °F and 20% humidity the chart gives 5 h, and the Gypsum Association warns that drying under 8 hours gives poor results. Setting-type compound such as Easy Sand 20 or 45 sets in under an hour and can be recoated as soon as it has set.
At 50 °F and 50% humidity one coat takes 36 h; at 40 °F, 2 d. USG asks for at least 55 °F for ready-mixed compound until it is dry.
Wait out the chart time for your room — the Gypsum Association recommends that over visual checks. Then touch it: a spot that feels cooler than the wall is still drying. An even, lighter color is a hint, not proof.
Yes. Raising the room by 5 °F lowers relative humidity by about 15%, which moves you up the chart; ventilation then carries the moisture out.
Easy Sand sets rather than dries: Easy Sand 20 in 25–35 minutes, Easy Sand 45 in 50–65 minutes, Easy Sand 90 in 95–120 minutes. Recoat once set; let it dry before priming, usually the next day.
